Privacy policy
ThreatMap has no accounts, no ads and no ad tracking. This policy explains the little we do collect to make the app work, and what happens to it.
Last updated October 10, 2026
The short version
- You never sign up or give us your name, email or phone number.
- Your location is sent to our servers only to search for registered offenders around it. What we keep is rounded, not your exact position.
- Apple handles payments. We never see your card or Apple ID.
- We don't sell your information or share it for advertising.
What we collect
| Data | Why | What we keep |
|---|---|---|
| Location | To find registered offenders near you, or near a place you search on the map. | When an area hasn't been searched before, its center rounded to about 100 m (330 ft). For every request, a position rounded to 0.1° (about 7 miles). Never your exact coordinates. |
| Anonymous user ID | A random ID created the first time you open the app, so we can apply usage limits and help you with support. | The ID. It isn't linked to your name, email or Apple ID. |
| Subscription status | To confirm you have an active subscription. The app sends Apple's signed record of your purchase, which we verify. | The product, and the transaction ID Apple assigns to your subscription. Not your payment details. |
| Usage data | To understand how the app is used, fix problems and plan which areas to support better. | When you searched, how many results came back, and whether the request succeeded. |
| Device and app data | Collected by our service providers (below) to show the subscription screen and deliver maps. | Device model, OS version, app version, language and similar technical details. |
We don't collect contacts, photos, health data, browsing history or anything else from your device. Location is only used while the app is open; ThreatMap doesn't ask for background location.
How we use it
We use the information above only to:
- search state sex offender registries for the area you're looking at and show you the results;
- save search results for up to 30 days, so looking at the same area again is fast;
- check your subscription and apply fair-use limits;
- answer support requests, prevent abuse and keep the service secure;
- measure aggregate usage, such as how many searches are made and in which regions.
We don't use your information for advertising, and we don't build profiles of you.
How long we keep it
- Saved registry search results are deleted after 30 days.
- Rounded locations, subscription IDs and usage records are kept while they're useful for running the service, preventing abuse and understanding usage, then deleted or reduced to aggregate statistics.
- If you ask us to delete your data, we do so within 30 days, unless the law requires us to keep it.
Your choices and rights
- Location: you can turn off location access in iOS Settings at any time. You can still search areas by moving the map.
- Access and deletion: email us at privacy@threatmap.app with your user ID (in the app, open Settings → About → User ID and tap to copy it). We'll send you what we hold or delete it.
- Subscription: manage or cancel it in your Apple ID settings. Deleting the app does not cancel it.
Depending on where you live (for example California, Colorado, Virginia or other states with privacy laws), you may have rights to know, access, correct, delete and port your personal information, and to opt out of its sale or use for targeted advertising. We don't sell or target ads, and you can exercise the other rights by emailing us. We won't treat you differently for doing so. You can also use an authorized agent; we may ask them to show they act for you.
About the people shown in the app
The offender information in ThreatMap is public record published by US state sex offender registries. It isn't collected from our users. If you believe a registry record about you is wrong, contact the state registry that published it; it is the authoritative source and the only one that can correct it. You can also let us know at support@threatmap.app. See Support for details.
Security
Everything the app sends travels over encrypted connections. Our database is only reachable by our own servers, not by the app directly. No system is perfectly secure, but we limit what we keep so there is little to expose.
Children
ThreatMap is meant for adults and isn't directed at children under 13. We don't knowingly collect personal information from children. If you think a child has used the app, contact us and we'll delete the related data.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we'll update the date above. If the change is significant, we'll also tell you in the app before it takes effect.
